What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling is focused on a specific problem whereas psychotherapy addresses underlying issues which are less easily grasped. I am a qualified counsellor and in the final stages of further studies in psychotherapy. My approach involves both counselling and psychotherapy.

What approach do you take to counselling and psychotherapy?

Psychoanalysis has since split into many different psychotherapies. My training is in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, this approach aims to draw from many of the different  approaches. I have an interest in the existential approach which considers the stresses and strains of our relationship to our society, culture and personal history. I favour meditation to behavioural techniques for working through symptoms such as anxiety and panic. Similar to mindfulness, meditation helps to develop a centredness by 'sitting with' thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations.

What mental health difficulties do you work with?

I have experience working with a range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, panic, low self-esteem, relationship problems, anger, trauma, bereavement, abuse, bullying, post traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, work-related problems, dissociative disorders.

Who do you work with?

I have experience adults from a wide range of age, background and cultures. I work with the LGBTQ communities.

How many sessions does counselling and psychotherapy take?

It depends on each person's individual needs. My approach includes both long and short-term work. Some people find six or twelve sessions is enough to work through a particular problem, others find long-term work is more effective in order to work through more deep-rooted issues.

What can I expect from the first session?

The first session is a chance to get to know each other and develop a focus of the work. It is also an opportunity for you to consider if we are a good match. In order to get the most out of therapy it is important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with.

How do I pay?

At the end of each session by credit or debit card (preferred) or cash.

What is your cancellation policy?

I charge the session fee if less than 48 hours notice is given.
